Is my donation to the Johannesburg Queer Chorus eligible for a tax refund?

Section 18A is a provision of the South African tax system which allows taxpayers to receive tax refunds for donating to specific types of organisations. The government requires that funds donated to approved organisations be used for specific public benefit activities (PBAs) as defined by the income tax act.

The JQC's core mission of providing a communal space for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to enjoy learning and performing music does not readily fall into the prescribed list of PBAs. We would have to make substantial changes to the mission and day-to-day activities of our organisation to qualify for Section 18A status. This means that donations made to the JQC are not currently eligible for tax refunds.

The JQC supports and agrees with the stringent requirements applied to organisations under Section 18A and we believe that they play a vital role in ensuring that the system is not misused. We hope you will still choose to support the JQC with your donation!
